Payback For The Prosecutor Of Amrozi And Company

06-12-2008

Indeed the plot of Allah is perfect in its embodiment. The payback from Allah can be quickened in this world, which no one can stop. That was exactly what happened to the state prosecutor, Urip Gunawan who was sentenced to 20 years in jail for receiving a bribe of US$660,000 from businesswoman Artalyta Suryani, March 2 2008. The bribe was allegedly related to his position as the leader of an Attorney General’s Office team investigating to stop the Bank of Indonesia Liquidity Support’s probe into the alleged embezzlement of funds involving tycoon Sjamsul Nursalim. Artalyta, the Indonesian business woman was also arrested by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Besides that, Urip was also found guilty in an extortion case. He tried to extort 1 million Rupiah from Glen Surya Yusuf during Glen’s time as the Chairman of Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency.

In this high profile court hearings, there have been differing opinions within the Judge Council as to the given sentence for Urip Gunawan’s offence. Judge Abdurrahman Hasan and Surya Jaya wanted a severer sentence, namely a life sentence. Besides that, the Judge Council still fined him 500 million Rupiah in conjunction with an eight months imprisonment. The proceedings was led by a team of judges which was made up of Miswari Ismijati, Madya Suhardja, As'adi Al Ma'ruf, Abdurrahman Hasan, and Surya Jaya, on 27th November 2008.

Punishment From Allah SWT

It is still fresh in our memory that Urip Tri Gunawan was the prosecutor who decided to give the death sentence in the prosecution of Amrozi and Company.

Now just an unfortunate end had befallen upon this once praised prosecutor of Indonesia who was caught in the corruption case not long after successfully handling the case of Amrozi and Company.

"If he was the one giving the death sentence to Amrozi before, now he should have been prosecuted as severely as possible. Give him the same death sentence if possible because he was betraying the trust of the President, Prosecuting Attorneys and was embarrassing the institution. He also betrayed his own oath," the deputy Speaker of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Aksa Mahmud said in March 2008.

According to him, as the upholder of law senior state prosecutor Urip should show good examples, not displaying shameful behaviors.

Amrozi’s Case

There was an interesting story regarding (the late) Amrozi with the prosecuting attorney Urip. Year 2003, when handling the case of Bali Bombing 1, Urip chided Amrozi in the middle of the proceedings for not wearing any shoes.

Then, Urip right away bought a pair of shoes to be worn by Amrozi. Out of anybody’s expectation, Amrozi refused the gift. Amrozi reasoned, he did not want to use a pair of shoes bought with money obtained from corruption.

To investigate, state prosecutor Urip asked the lawyer for Amrozi, Wirawan Adenan to buy his client shoes.

"Mr. Urip Tri Gunawan, the state prosecutor asked me to buy shoes for Amrozi, as Amrozi himself was adamant not to wear the shoes prepared by the prosecuting attorney," Wirawan said then.

Interestingly, after that unique incidence with Amrozi, the career of the man once named ‘the Best Prosecuting Attorney of Indonesia’ was threatened and about to come to an end after the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrested him in the house of Sjamsul Nursalim, caught with a sum of US$ 660 thousand or equivalent to Rp 6 millions, as evidence.

In the history of the eradication of what the government called “terrorism”, there have always been unpleasant comeback left by it, whether it be punishment to Imam Samudera’s investigators, the state prosecutor who prosecuted Amrozi and Company, as well as the police who killed the Trio Bali Mujahid in the execution rituals.
