Qur'an's Verse “Rahmatan Lil ‘Alamin” Always Misused

JAKARTA – The Chairman in the field of Da'wah of the FPI (Islamic Defenders Front), Habib Muksin bin Ahmad Al-Attas said that the expression Rahmatan lil ‘alamin is often misused as a shield to commit immoralities and munkar. He disclosed this during a dialogue event themed “Ahlussunnah wal jama’ah as the Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin” organized by the PMII at the State University of Jakarta, Monday (27/2).

“Many people are manipulating this words, like the drunkards who say, don't bother us, isn't Islam rahmatan lil ‘alamin?” said Habib Muksin in giving some examples of the similar misuses of the words Rahmatan lil ‘alamin, such as the homosexuals who do not want to be disturbed with the excuse of those words.

Whereas according to Habib Muksin, the Rahmatan lil’alamin is the result of practicing the teachings of Islam, namely the Aqeedah, Shari’ah and Akhlaq, in a comprehensive manner and in accordance with the guidelines of Rasulullah SAW, in the dunya by the slaves of Allah, whether it be in the social life, education or ibaadah.

“When those three components (Aqeedah, Shari’ah and Akhlaq) are applied, the impact is Rahmatan lil ‘alamin,”
he explained.

In applying the universal teachings of Islam comprehensively and in order for it to become a solution to every problem of life, he said a Muslim must have solidarity to make it happen.

“The ummah of Muhammad SAW must have the interest in struggling for Islam,” Habib Muksin said.

That struggle, Habib Muksin added, has three arenas which have different attributes, first is Ad-Da'wah which implicates us have to sympathy, to invite gently and coolly. Second, Al-Hisbah which is the amar makruf nahi munkar, and being firm in their actions. And, third is Al-Jihad Fie sabilillah which demands the character of an inevitable hardness in conducting it, where all aspects must be done and not abandoned.

“All three have their own character, every Muslim must do them in accordance with their own ability. What's important is to not reproach each of the brother who is still unable to be in the other arena,” he explained.

Variations In Da'wah Of The Islam Movements Is A Reflection Of Rahmah

JAKARTA - The Islamic movements have different methodologies of struggle, there are those that are concerned with the issue of education, the amar ma’ruf nahi munkar, the tabligh da'wah, the participation in politics, to the calling for the establishment of the Khilafah. Those differences according to Ustadz Amir Faishol Fath is a manifestation of the objective of Islam i.e. the Rahmatan lil ‘alamin.

“Indeed, the variations carried out by our brothers is Reflection of Rahmah,” said Ustadz Amir, the PKS's Chairman in the field of Da'wah, to arrahmah.com, in between the dialogue entitled “Ahlussunnah wal Jama’ah as the Rahmatan lil ‘alamin” at Masjid Nurul Irfan, State University of Jakarta, Monday (27/2).

Due to that, according to Ustadz Amir, the movement that is doing Hisbah or the application of amar ma’ruf nahi munkar also belongs to the efforts of the said movement, inviting mankind towards rahmah.

“The Hisbah carried out by the like of the FPI is for the sake of rahmah, not because of hatred, but simply because of wanting to be free from the hell fire,” he said.

Very often, according to him, the media or enemies of Islam see the actions of Muslims just from its zahir (outside appearance) and not thoroughly.

“For example, I am an Ustadz or Habib and a woman wants to killed her husband, then I prevent it by holding her hand. And then it is photographed, and right away it is reported that this Ustadz is holding a woman who is not his wife, 'Holding her hand', not 'why holding her hand', only a partial of the occurrence is reported,” he explained.

Ustadz Amir himself explained that the objective of the verse Wama arsalnaka illa rahmatan lil ‘alamin contains the denial (rejection) of other objectives of why Rasulullah SAW was sent other than the istbat (determination) of Rahmah as the main objective of his mission.

Islam, in its mission, he added, contains two Ihsan objectives, namely doing Ihsan towards Allah and doing Ihsan towards the living creatures.

“If one of them is missing, it's guaranteed to enter the hell fire,” he said while giving an example of a story from a hadith about a woman ahlul ibaadah who tied up a cat until it died, and then was condemned as bound for hell by Rasulullah SAW.

More than that, the haqiqah of Rahmah according to Ustadz Amir is inviting mankind so as to be spared from hell. In order to be spared from hell, there has to be a guideline, namely the Qur’an which speaks on the order of concepts.

“As it is still theoritical in nature, then there needs to be someone to guide, so Rasulullah SAW was sent as a rahmah (mercy),” he explained.

Ustadz Amir Faisol Fath: Da'wah Is Not Always Peaceful

Commenting on the da'wah which is hoped to be not bloody, Ustadz Amir Faisol Fath said that da'wah is not forever faced smoothly and safely. However, da'wah too often is also faced with challenges from the munkar and violence, therefore naturally, action that should be taken must also be in accordance with the situation.

"Rasulullah was not forever silent too, there was the battle, there was the da'wah. That is Islam, do not just take partially, it should be comprehensive," said Ustadz Amir to arrahmah.com, at the State University of Jakarta, Monday afternoon (27/2).

Earlier, an activist from the Asian Moslem Action Network (AMAN) in her presentation asked so that the da'wah that are done by the various groups, must be committed to not use violence, whatever the reason.

"Can we not conduct da'wah without violence? I think we can," said Dwi Rubianti who is also an ex-activist of the PMII.

Ustadz Amir added, a group must not attack and blame other groups that are doing deeds that are different from its own.

"Just because we are active in the arena of development, do not vilify those who are conducting amar-ma'ruf nahi munkar, we cannot become a doctor and a policeman at the same time," he said.

It can be seen, according to him, on what happens in Palestine, which is suffering oppression, it is not possible to be silent, resistance is must.

"Due to that, we must see ourselves as superior, having an Izzah, Islam teaches that, not to be inferior and only take partially, that is certainly not from the teachings of Islam," he said.

Earlier, he analogized the importance of not taking the stand of being silent only in the name of a cool da'wah, by illustrating the the cycle of the human health that is not always healthy, but also is experiencing illness that requires one to take a stand to cure it.

"If that person is inferior he would only be doing nothing. However, if he is superior, then he will find the cure and even go to the doctor that allows to him to obtain a more intensive treatment. So da'wah is not forever peaceful, sometimes it experiences pain and have to be amputated," Ustadz Amir concluded.
