Canadian Media Blind to Afghan Civilian Deaths One might have expected our major national media to engage such an important discussion with in-depth news coverage of the conflict, along with critical and incisive editorials and opinion pieces. Instead, our most respected media went to considerable lengths to avoid negative portrayals of our military role and that of our NATO allies, even to the point of completely ignoring certain shocking and disastrous events which are of vital importance in understanding the role of our military in Afghanistan and its effects on the people of that country.

Soldiers die, CEOs prosper As soldiers have died in displaying personal patriotism, the pay gap between soldiers and defense CEOs has exploded. Before 9/11, the gap between CEOs of publicly traded companies and army privates was already a galling 190 to 1. Today, it is 308 to 1. The average army private makes $25,000 a year. The average defense CEO makes $7.7 million. ``Did this surprise us? No, because we've been watching since Sept. 11," said Betsy Leondar-Wright, communications director for United for a Fair Economy. ``While the rest of us were worrying about terrorism and mourning the people who died, the CEOs were maneuvering their companies to take advantage of fear and changing oil supply, not just for competition but for personal enrichment." The top profiteers after 9/11 were the CEOs of United Technologies ($200 million), General Dynamics ($65 million), Lockheed Martin ($50 million), and Halliburton ($49 million). Other firms where CEO pay the last four years added up to $25 million to $45 million were Textron, Engineered Support Systems, Computer Sciences, Alliant Techsystems, Armor Holding, Boeing, Health Net, ITT Industries, Northrop Grumman, Oshkosh Truck, URS, and Raytheon. While Army privates died overseas earning $25,000 a year, David Brooks, the disgraced former CEO of body-armor maker DHB, made $192 million in stock sales in 2004. He staged a reported $10 million bat mitzvah for his daughter. The 2005 pay package for Halliburton CEO David Lesar, head of the firm that most symbolizes the occupation's waste, overcharges, and ghost charges on no-bid contracts, was $26 million, according to the report's analysis of federal Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

India stays Israel`s single largest arms customer Buoyed by Indian defence procurement worth USD 1.5 billion, the Israeli defence industries have recorded all time high sales figures in 2006. "India was Israel's biggest customer with purchases reaching USD 1.5 billion," Maj Gen. Yossi Ben-Hanan, head of SIBAT, the Foreign Defense Assistance and Defense Export Department at the defence ministry told media. It included Israel's single largest sale to a foreign country made by the Israel Aircraft Industries in the sale of the Barak Naval anti-missile defense system, valued at some USD 450 million, Ben-Hanan told the daily. Unperturbed by the US entry into the Indian market, the defence official said it would not make a dent in Israeli defence sales to New Delhi. "America sells fighter jets, tanks and helicopters and we do not compete with them," Ben-Hanan said. On the contrary, he said, that it may even lead to an increase. Message of respected Ameer-ul-Momineen Mullah Muhammad Omar (Mujahid)

In the name of Allah Almighty, the most Merciful, the Beneficent

All praises and gratitude is due only to Allah Almighty. Peace and blessings of Allah be upon the leader of Mujahideen Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

I extend Eid greetings to our Mujahid nation, the Muslims world over and especially to Mujahideen in sacred bunkers.

Eid-ul-Azha is in fact, an ideology of sacrifice. While celebrating the day, the Muslims must realize that sacrifices have kept the thinking and ideology alive. An ideology based on sacrifices can never fail. You can see that present resistance and struggle in Afghanistan has amply proved the point.

On one side, Pharos of the time and world's cruel forces have joined hands with all their resources and might. On the other, helpless Afghans are putting up unflinching resistance with ordinary means and resources. Even then they have shattered their myth. Now they are looking for a safe exit out of this quagmire. This is simply because they (Mujahideen) believe and follow the ideology of sacrifices which never submits and accepts defeat. The enemy will face thumping defeat until and unless this ideology is there and alive.

I am confident that Afghanistan will present a new and exemplary (surprising) lesson for the world at large.

Leaders of some Islamic countries are bent upon eliminating the Muslim's spirit of resistance power – Jihad. Defense of our ideology and Jihad are symbols of the Muslims' honor and dignity. Whosoever intends to tarnish Ummah's image will face Allah's wrath and the Muslims would never spare him (would drag and crack him).

(Allah will humiliate and disgrace him)

Invaders of our country must know that those who transgress on others' beliefs will face the same fate as that in Iraq and Afghanistan. Participants of Jirgas are agents with no true mandate from any tribe.

I expect all Muslims of the region to take heed of conspiracies hatched by so-called 'big' nations. They should not be misled by satanic tactics of the invaders who are facing imminent defeat. Now they (invaders) are hatching new conspiracies and committing blunders.

I congratulate our sincere and dedicated Mujahideen on their achievements. I once again urge them (Mujahideen) to protect their bunkers (strongholds) in a sane way and be mindful of not resorting to actions that may result in casualties of innocent ordinary people.

Mujahideen only wage war against enemy in accordance with the Quranic principles and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Any action contrary to given instructions would earn bad name for Jihad.

So we are bound only to target our enemy. We must be more cautious and careful in focusing the target. We should have friendly and sincere relations with our own Muslim people.

Ruthless bombing of our inhuman enemies are killing and displacing thousands of Afghans, particularly women and children. It has now become a permanent cruel practice and barbaric habit of our enemy. We must stand by the people to fight against the enemy and to take revenge of their blood.

I am confident that blood of innocent people and Mujahideen will yield results. The enemy will have to quit the region with humiliation and disgrace. Invaders have not come here on their own choice. And they will not leave willingly. They have committed aggression and we will drive them to out. Afghans have a history of expelling their enemies as no enemy and invader had quit Afghanistan willingly.

I pray for the victory and courage of the Mujahid nation

Ameer-ul-Momineen

Mullah Muhammad Omar (Mujahid)

Taliban command structure in Fata ‘alarms’ US The Taliban have established a command and control structure in the tribal areas and are using their “sanctuary” for regrouping, said a senior US official on Tuesday. Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher, however, acknowledged at a briefing in Ottawa, Canada, that Pakistan was aware of the problem and was making concerted efforts to deal with it. Mr Boucher, who looks after South and Central Asian affairs at the State Department, said the presence of Taliban forces in the tribal region was “one of the key items” on the US agenda. A text of the statement, issued by the State Department on Wednesday, quoted him as saying that “the Taliban have been able to use these areas for sanctuary and for command and control and for regrouping and supply.” The United States, he said, was not only alarmed by this development but had also conveyed its concerns to Pakistan. “We have been very clear with the Pakistani government that this is one of the key items on all our agendas – on our own agenda, on the Pakistani agenda, the Afghan agenda,” he said.

Afghan president, UN reject Pakistan's mining of border Afghanistan's president and the United Nations dismissed Thursday Pakistan's decision to mine and fence the frontier between the rowing neighbours as a way to cut back cross-border "Mujahideen Attacks". President Hamid Karzai said he would use "every method" to stop mines being planted on the border. Pakistan said this week it had tasked its army with working out ways to fence or mine parts of the rugged 2,500-kilometre (1,500-mile) frontier to stop Taliban militants entering Afghanistan to carry out attacks. Karzai said Afghanistan had suffered enough from mines within its borders. It is one of the world's most mined countries despite internationally backed efforts to destroy millions of landmines laid by the Soviet military during the 1979-1989 Soviet occupation and during the subsequent civil wars. Afghans "have suffered and we are very much for the removal, prevention of mines than laying of mines", the president said. Mines still kill or maim around 100 people a month in the war-scarred nation, according to demining agencies. "We will use every method, every way of peaceful means, of dialogue and of friendly cooperation to prevent the laying of mines on the border because the laying of mines is not going to get us anywhere," Karzai said. The United Nations in Afghanistan echoed the concern. "The UN is opposed to the use of landmines," spokesman Aleem Siddique was quoted as saying. "Afghanistan is already heavily mined and a lot of its civilians, mainly children, have been killed and maimed. "From a UN point of view, fencing or mining the border is not a way to build trust and confidence among Pakistan and Afghanistan."
