Today's News From Around The World Tuesday 27 March 2007

Must Read European colonialists conspired to destroy Khilafah On Monday 3rd March 1924 (28th Rajab 1342AH), the world woke to the news that Mustafa Kemal in Turkey had officially abolished the Khilafah. That night Abdul-Mejid II, the last Khaleefah of the Muslims, was bundled in to a car with a suitcase of clothes and money and exiled from Turkey, never to return. This is how 1342 years of Islamic rule ended. The following is a historical account of the actions of the colonial powers in first sowing the seeds of disunity amongst Muslims by implanting the idea of nationalism and then finally administering the destruction of the Khilafah state by their treacherous agents.

Mr. Bush, Your Arab League Summit is Convened This is not a summit of leaders but a trough of corrupt cowardly dictators whose self interest is above all considerations of faith, humanity, and service to their people. Oh, how history repeats itself in the Arab world. For over a century the Arabs have failed miserably in their analytical assessment and response to the colonial ambitions of the British, French, Soviets, Americans, and today’s dominant power-- Israel

Pakistan crosses a dangerous boundary Independent sources confirmed to Asia Times Online that special security forces of the Pakistan Army conducted raids in an attempt to arrest Uzbek commander Tahir Yaldeshiv. There are unconfirmed reports that some Pakistani soldiers died in clashes with Uzbek militants.

Further, it has emerged that a faction of the Taliban led by Maulvi Nazir allied with the Pakistani military to take on the foreign militants. This is a controversial move. Last September, Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire with pro-Taliban, Pashtun tribal leaders under which it withdrew thousands of troops from the North Waziristan tribal area and released several hundred Taliban and al-Qaeda militants from jail.

This agreement is now in jeopardy and, more significant, it pits the "coalition" of Nazir's Taliban and the Pakistani military against the leaders of the "Islamic State of Waziristans" . These leaders control the shuras (councils) of the Mujahideen in the two Waziristans and support the foreign militants.

American Christian kafir terrorists Military launches huge show of force in Persian Gulf The American Christian kafir terrorists Navy on Tuesday began its largest demonstration of force in the Persian Gulf since the2003 invasion of Iraq, led by a pair of aircraft carriers and backed by warplanes flying simulated attack maneuvers off the coast of Iran. The American Christian kafir terrorists military exercises come just four days after Iran's capture of 15 British Christian kafir terrorists military sailors and marines who had, Iran said, strayed into Iranian waters near the Gulf.

UN Security Or United Rape? As I watched Iran being hauled in front of the United Nations ‘Security’ Council, a vivid picture conjured up in my mind – my native country Iran, a vulnerable and defenseless beauty being prepared for violation by brutal savages. As she struggles to defend her honor, no one is prepared to come to her aid, save a few. Even her own children, those raised on her soil hope she will be brutally raped. With lust-filled eyes, they hope to fulfill their ambitions on her ravaged ruins, her broken pride.

Who are these beasts, and what has transformed this United body to such a menace?

The most uninformed among us knows that the United States is dictating the rules at the ‘Security’ Council. The driving force behind the American policy makers’ actions is Israel represented by AIPAC and other Israeli representatives in the United States. However, while Zionism gives motivation to the neo-conservatives in Washington to rape and ravage the Middle-East, Washington stands to benefit from AIPAC’s/Israel’s commands.

Revisiting Babri These formulations were lapped up by the dominant middle classes, who started responding more and more to Yatras and other VHP initiated campaigns. After playing this 'Muslim card' the immature Congress leadership decided to play the Hindu card by yielding to the pressure of BJP/VHP and company for getting the locks of Babri opened and later permitting Shilaynyas for Ram temple. This pressure of Hindu rightwing was also discernible when Rajiv launched the campaign for 1989 elections on the plank of Ram Rajya. These came in handy to Hindu consolidation, which later got further boost when V.P. Singh, for his own compulsions, decided to implement Mandal. To bypass Mandal BJP resorted to intensify Yatras, identity based politics. Keeping electoral compulsions in mind, BJP's politics revolved around Ram Temple as its central agenda. Incidentally Ram temple was no where on the agenda of BJP, which was harping on Gandhian socialism, till then. Its discovery that Lord Ram can be of great help in garnering votes led it to put most of its eggs in the basket of the campaign and conspiracy to destroy the Babri Mosque.

Daily Telegraph- "War continues in Chechnya" One Western journalist, Adrian Blomfield, could enter in the Chechen village of Tazen-kala. He became a witness that war continues in Chechnya, in spite of Putin's propaganda. This person is not a supporter of Jihad, and he somewhere uses incorrect terminology, such as "rebels" or "wahabi" in appliance to mojaheds and "special forces" or "loyalists" in appliance to the bloody puppets and traitors. But he states without any hesitation: "War is not finished in Chechnya", in this connection his article has value. On this reason we publish it without changes.

China a bit to take over Tibet invest $13 billion in Tibet The money would be spent on 180 projects in the years up to 2010, including extending the predominantly Buddhist region's first railway, Xinhua news agency said. China shifts to euros for Iran oil China's state-run Zhuhai Zhenrong Corp, the biggest buyer of Iranian crude worldwide, began paying for its oil in euros late last year as Tehran moves to diversify its foreign reserves away from U.S. dollars. The Chinese firm, which buys more than a tenth of exports from the world's fourth-largest crude producer, has changed the payment currency for the bulk of its roughly 240,000 barrels per day (bpd) contract, Beijing-based sources said. Just one more reason for America to attack Iran, as this move by Iran endangers the US dollar hegemony, just as Saddam was about to do by transfer from US dollars to Euros when selling Iraq's oil in the international market.

Russia, China sign $4 billion in trade deals Russia and China have signed new trade deals in metals, mining, and oil worth a total $4 billion. The 21 contracts include an agreement by state-controlled Russian oil company Rosneft to supply jet fuel to China as well as long-term export contracts for Russian steel products. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao oversaw the deals today on the second day of the Chinese president's visit to Russia. Earlier today, Putin and Hu opened a large Chinese trade fair in Moscow. Nearly 200 Chinese companies are showcasing their products at the fair, said to be China's biggest ever in a foreign country.

Hidden US hand in Philippine election Sulu's economy is still highly reliant on foreign aid. The US has not indicated whether it plans to continue pouring substantial development assistance into the region if Misuari is elected over Loong, but the US Embassy in Manila has insisted that it will respect the results of Sulu's democratic process. Yet it's clear to many voters that hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of aid programs lie in the electoral balance.

A Cluster Bomb Treaty: Again, It's The U.S. v. The World Thankfully, the international community is taking action. In an historic step forward, Norway hosted the Oslo Conference on Cluster Munitions in late February 2007, where 49 countries met to discuss how to address the indiscriminate and lasting effects of cluster munitions on civilians. At the conference, 46 countries agreed to a landmark declaration detailing their goal to conclude by 2008 a legally binding treaty prohibiting the use, production, transfer, and stockpiling of cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians. Half of the world’s 34 producer countries, one-third of the world’s stockpiling countries, six users or former users, and six affected states signed the Oslo declaration. Countries will meet again to determine the details of the treaty in Lima, Vienna, and Dublin over the next two years. The Bush administration did not send a representative to the Oslo meeting and, absent a policy change, is unlikely to participate in subsequent meetings.

Will an American Surge Win the War for Oil? Alright, so a plan that was developed with questionable science and selective readings of intelligence has, after initially being supported by a population that trusted what they were told, become exceedingly unpopular. Despite the fact that the normally timid opposition has been uncharacteristically emboldened into questioning the goals of the policy, this same opposition states “We have to stay the course,” while mumbling about finding alternatives that will help the economy wean off dependence on this oil-producing region. The noises being made by politicians on the matter is simply reflective of the over-all population who say time and again, when asked, that reversing the dangerous course we are on is their top priority. So the neoconservatives in power have, after their secret plans were leaked, begun to escalate operations in a massive ‘Surge!’

US Senate launches Iraq debate The US Senate on Monday opened debate on legislation which sets a goal of pulling combat troops out of Iraq by March 31, 2008, launching a new showdown with President George W. Bush. The debate came after the House of Representatives last week passed its own version of the spending bill for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, including a firm deadline for getting US troops out of Iraq by August 31, 2008. Bush has vowed to veto any legislation that calls for a timetable for withdrawal, and accused Democratic leaders of micromanaging military strategy best left to generals. "We are now in the fifth year of the war, a terrible war," said Democratic Senator Robert Byrd as he opened the debate. "Our job in the Senate is not to look backwards, but to look forwards, the constitution clearly gives the Congress the power ... to decide when this nation should go to war ... and the power of the purse." But Republican Senator Thad Cochran said the Senate would be better served by giving Bush's new strategy to surge more than 21,500 troops into Iraq time to work. "The Senate should provide the resources necessary to accomplish this mission. Congress should not be tying the hands of our commanders. No votes were expected on the 121.6 billion dollar budget on Monday. Bush's Republican allies have signaled they will try to block the timeline for withdrawal.

Los Angeles- Vicious War on the Homeless Widespread homelessness in the world's richest country is a shameful indictment of a system that places profit before human need. That Los Angeles' best response to its homeless crisis is to criminalize, intimidate and incarcerate its most vulnerable shows why we need to organize and fight for a world with different priorities.

The Pentagon’s Power to Jail Americans Indefinitely Last Friday, the presiding judge in the case, Marcia Cooke, denied Padilla’s motion to dismiss. The judge held that when a person, including an American citizen, is held in custody by the Pentagon as an “enemy combatant,” the time doesn’t start running with respect to his right to a speedy trial. It begins running, she held, only when he becomes part of the federal criminal-justice system. Gee, I wonder if the judge’s reasoning applies to the rest of the Bill of Rights as well. Maybe the First Amendment doesn’t apply if it’s the Pentagon that is suppressing speech and assembly as part of its perpetual “war on terror.” Or maybe the Second Amendment prohibits only the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), not the Pentagon, from seizing guns from the American people, as it is doing as part of the “war on terror” in Iraq.

Robert Garside becomes first man to run around the world A 40-year-old British man will on Tuesday become the first person recognized as having run around the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Robert Garside will run into Picadilly Circus in central London, where he began his first attempt to jog around the world in December 1996, to be presented with a certificate by authorities from the publication. Garside, then a 29-year-old psychology student, failed in that attempt, and it was only on his fourth try -- beginning at India Gate in New Delhi the following year -- that he succeeded, ending up back in the Indian capital in June 2003. "I am unbelievably happy that an incredibly long project has finally ended up on a positive note," Garside said. "I am so happy and relieved and I am so grateful to all those people all over the world who helped me throughout the years I was running." While traversing the world over five years and eight months, Garside ran across 30 countries on six continents, covering more than 30,000 miles (48,000 kilometres). During that time, he slept in the snow in the Himalayas, and at a monastery in Tibet, and also had to out-run thieves in Mexico and gunmen in Panama. He even spent five nights in a Chinese jail for not having the right travel documents.

Good read, while this article talks about Iran but we can see this technique being used by US in destabilizing countries around the world Subverting Iran Washington’s Covert War inside Iran According to a former CIA official, funding for armed separatist groups operating in Iran is paid from the CIA’s classified budget. Arab leaders ready to sell their brothers blood Saudi Arabia's foreign minister suggested Monday that Arab leaders would be willing to consider changes in their 2002 peace offer to Israel to make it "compatible" with new developments. The statement from Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal came as Arab League foreign ministers convened Monday to prepare for a leaders summit later this week, expected to focus on how to revive Middle East peace efforts. Arab leaders have, until now, publicly rejected Israeli calls for them to make changes to the 2002 Arab peace offer.

Is the American Empire on the Brink of Collapse? U.S. military expert Chalmers Johnson argues the catastrophe in Iraq and the staggering cost of running a military that stretches across 130 countries on 737 bases may finally cost America its empire. I believe that we're close to a tipping point right now. What happened to the Soviet Union between 1989 and 1991 could easily be happening to us for essentially the same reasons. Imperial overreach, inability to reform, rigid economic ideology. ... The world's balance of power didn't change one iota on September 11, 2001. The only way we could lose the power and influence we had at that time was through our own actions, and that's what we did.

The Violence of the Letter- Land Claims and Continuing Colonial Conquest in Canada The recent struggle over lands in southern Ontario near Caledonia points to the continuing problem with land-claims policy in Canada. This sentence could be used to begin an article every few years, only the place names change: the recent struggle at Grassy Narrows, the recent struggle at Stoney Point, the recent struggle at Oka. While there is a sense in which the current land-claims policy goes back to the beginnings of colonialism in Canada, the recent permutations are worth attention. Any understanding of contemporary conflicts needs to be informed by a strong and detailed sense of what has happened historically, as well as what is happening today.

What Does 'Holocaust Denial' Really Mean? For more than fifty years Jewish scholars have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to document each Jewish victim of the Nazi Holocaust. The Nazis were German, obsessed with record keeping. Yet only 3 million names have been collected and many of them died of natural causes. So why is it so wrong to doubt that fewer than 6 million Jews were murdered in the Second World War?

AIPAC and Anti-Gentile Racism It is time to change the terms of the debate. Instead of AIPAC critics defending themselves against accusations of anti-Semitism, it is time for AIPAC critics to make AIPAC defend itself against charges of anti-Gentile racism.

The project would allow Pakistan to gain some 500 million dollars annually as transit tax for the Indian sector of the pipeline.

Pakistan's top court seeks answers on missing Pakistan's Supreme Court on Monday gave the government two weeks to come up with information about hundreds of people who have gone missing after being taken in custody. The suspended head of the Supreme Court, Iftikhar Chaudhry, took up the issue of the missing persons last year. Justice Javed Iqbal, heading a three-member Supreme Court bench in place of suspended Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry said Monday, the court wanted to determine who had detained the missing and under what authority they had done so. “If they are not answerable to any ministry, they are certainly and surely answerable to this court,” Justice Iqbal said referring to security agencies. The issue had to be settled “not within months but within days”, he said, adding that the government was responsible for determining the whereabouts of the missing. He directed the attorney general, the government's top lawyer, to submit a concise reply on the issue in two weeks. The next hearing has been set for April 10.

Tiger aircraft bomb Sri Lanka's main airbase, three killed Tamil Tiger rebels bombed Sri Lanka's main military airbase located next to the international airport Monday, leaving at least three airmen dead and 17 wounded, officials said.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) used their aircraft for the first time in a combat mission to bomb the Katunayake military base, Tiger spokesman Rasiah Ilanthiriyan said. "This mission was undertaken to reduce the air capability of the Sri Lankan airforce," Ilanthiriyan said.

Capitalism “There are two fruitcake religions infecting the USA right now: Kristianity and Ferengiism. By Ferengiism I mean the belief that you must do whatever makes you the most money no matter what the short or long term consequences to yourself or others. It is the state corporate religion.”

The biggest problem with capitalism is that its solutions are based purely on short term economics, how to provide a given service most cheaply to the consumer. Only producer and consumer are involved. However, in the process of providing that service, many others may be adversely affected, especially in the long term. They have no input into the decision making process. Examples would include such things as cars that pollute, boom boxes that can be heard for blocks, snowmobiles designed to harass wildlife, harsh chemicals that kill fish when improperly disposed of, or in an extreme case, atomic weapons. Capitalism fails to consider the big picture. It is sort of like looking at the world through gold-coloured glasses. It has no way of considering non-economic factors in decision making.

Radioactive waste coming to a location near you? Storing millions of bundles of intensely radioactive waste fuel underground in heavily populated southern and eastern Ontario is rapidly shaping up as a geologically safe choice, according to the nuclear industry. Earlier disposal studies by federal agencies concluded the Canadian Shield's granite was the only rock formation stable enough for the necessary millennia of storage. But a just released report from the industry-led Nuclear Waste Management Organization gives a tentative green light to locations like Toronto, London, Hamilton-Niagara, Windsor-Sarnia, Kingston, Ottawa and a swathe running from Kitchener- Waterloo to Barrie. Nuclear mausoleums could be buried a kilometre deep in these areas because the underlying sedimentary rock is low risk for fractures and water seepage, says the organization's annual report to the federal government. "Safety cases for repositories in sedimentary rock appear to be quite strong," the report says. The organization will not study a specific location until the federal government gives a green light to its favoured form of long-term storage.

About 1.9 million bundles of waste uranium fuel are now stored temporarily on site at Canada's 22 nuclear reactors, largely in concrete casks inside ordinary metal sheds on the surface. The waste can remain dangerously radioactive for as long as 100 centuries. More than $800 million has been spent by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., Ontario Power Generation and others since 1978 on research into storing waste fuel bundles deep in the shield. The federal government has not yet responded to the organization's formal November 2005 recommendation for a $24-billion mausoleum, consisting of caverns excavated up to a kilometre below ground. Blair ‘threatened’ to resign if questioned in corruption probe The Sunday Telegraph newspaper disclosed on Monday that British Prime Minister Tony Blair had threatened to resign if questioned as a suspect by police in the “cash for honours” probe. The weekly said, detectives investigating the scandal wanted to interview Blair under caution but backed off after being warned that it could have triggered his resignation. The “cash for honors” investigation centres on reports that political parties, mainly Blair’s governing Labor Party, offered seats in parliament’s unelected upper chamber, the House of Lords, in return for financial assistance. The Sunday Telegraph said officers wanted to question Blair during the second of the two interviews conducted in December and January. They wanted him to clarify comments he made in the first interview about the cover-up by senior aides.

United Nations Implications In War Crimes I think that this is a very important question. It is relevant for the debate about what kind of United Nations we need to protect the international community or to protect the 192 member governments from the danger that certain other governments misuse their authority, their information, their finances and their power to serve their own interest, but against the interests of peace, the interests of justice and the interests of mankind.

Iran Faces Politically Diluted Sanctions on Nukes There are no sanctions on Iran's oil exports, which account for over 60 to 70 percent of the country's foreign exchange earnings. And there are no calls for a travel ban on Iranian officials -- both of which the Western powers were keen on imposing, but which were blocked by Russia and China. Perhaps equally important, there are no cut-offs in export credit guarantees, given mostly by European nations to companies trading with Iran. Just as the Russians and the Chinese are protecting their arms sales and military technology transfers to Iran, the Europeans have successfully sought protection for their firms trading with Tehran.

Iran Shia kafir President: Iran’s Legal and Peaceful Nuclear Activities Won’t Stop Shia kafir Iran President Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made it clear last night that on no account will the Iranian nation stop its peaceful and legal nuclear activities as unjustly demanded by UN Security Council Resolution 1747. In his first cabinet meeting of the new Iranian calendar year, the President dismissed Resolution 1747 as part of the hostile policies of Global Arrogance against Iran. He said the victorious powers of World War II have unjustly imposed themselves upon the international community through such illegal means as manipulation of the UN and permanent membership at the Security Council, in order to undermine the honour, independence and progress of independent nations including Iran.

President Ahmadinejad said the enemies of Iranian nation have once again made mistakes in their decisions and opposition to Iran’s progress despite the setbacks they have continued to suffer since the past 28 years ago in their confrontation with Iran. He said Iran’s foes should know that nothing will happen in Iran and only the reputation of international organizations will be discredited, while the international community will no longer consider these international bodies as trustworthy. Finally, referring to the important remarks of the Supreme Leader of Revolution on the first day of the Iranian New Year, President Ahmadinejad said the Iranian government is more determined and motivated than last year to serve the people and the goals of the Revolution, while striving for Iran’s development more than ever.

Making a Killing: America's Private Army and the Business of War These private companies are part of a huge surge in the outsourcing of war, which is extremely evident in Iraq, as well as Afghanistan, Colombia, Haiti, and numerous other countries. Private contractors are the second-largest con- tingent of the "Coalition of the Willing" with a ratio of about one armed con- tractor for every two American soldiers. This is up from a ratio of one to sixty during the first Gulf War. The Pentagon estimates the number of contractors at around 100,000—but this is only an estimate because after four years in Iraq the military is only now beginning a survey to find the size of its contractor force.

This fighting was so severe and intensive, that hypocrites have asked support from invaders. All this armada was directed against 10 Mujahideen only, if believe to the Russian sources. Quebec Muslim leader blasts media A Montreal Muslim leader is accusing the media of manufacturing a crisis that resulted in an abrupt change to Quebec election rules for veiled voters. A decision by chief returning officer Marcel Blanchet means anyone who votes in Monday's election must uncover their face before casting a ballot. That includes Muslim women. Muslim Council of Montreal president Salam Elmenyawi says women wearing niqabs at the polls had been such a "non-issue" he didn't know electors were previously not obliged to show their faces to vote. Elmenyawi says the news reports that broadcast the old rule and related it to Muslim women fanned the flames of hatred in Quebec.

Counterinsurgency Manual Shows Canadian Military's New Face The manual will guide Canadian Forces doctrine and training well into the future, according to a draft edition obtained by IPS. A 250-page publication, the field manual outlines the principles and practices of fighting the kind of insurgencies that have come to define warfare for the Western powers in the 21st century, in places like Chechnya, Afghanistan and Iraq. Meanwhile, an Afghanistan-focused policy group, the Senlis Council, released the "alarming" results of a survey this week which polled 17,000 people in southern and eastern Afghanistan. The survey showed that one-half of respondents believe the Western-led war will fail to defeat the Taliban, and 87 percent of respondents believed that the tactics used by the Western forces in dealing with the insurgency were "not right".

"The results from the survey are extremely alarming because they indicate that the international community is in serious trouble in Afghanistan," Senlis Council president Norine MacDonald said in a statement Monday.

Mauritania: Deviating from Islam by dirty games in democracy Mauratania has long been torn by the dictators who ruled the innocent people of the country, corrupting their mentality and oppressing them. Upon learning that such tactics of oppression never mark the survival of any leader, the dictators decided to co-operate with the people by using devilish ideologies of democracy under command of the Western powers.

World's Biggest Debtor Nation: America On Top Again The typical American family is buried in debt. According to the Federal Reserve Fund, household debt equals almost 25 percent of net household worth, or 136 percent of disposable income. After wages fell behind inflation for a decade, Americans mortgaged their homes and ran up their credit cards to cover living expenses.

AIPAC: a foreign agent controlling the US government AIPAC is the leading player in what is sometimes referred to as "The Israel Lobby"--a coalition that includes major Jewish groups, neoconservative intellectuals and Christian Zionists. With its impressive contacts among Hill staffers, influential grassroots supporters and deep connections to wealthy donors, AIPAC is the lobby's key emissary to Congress. But in many ways, AIPAC has become greater than just another lobby; its work has made unconditional support for Israel an accepted cost of doing business inside the halls of Congress.

TV Evangelist John Hagee Wants War With Iran, and He Wants It Now! An even bigger obsession for dispensationalists has always been Israel. For the average dispensationalist, modern-day secular Israel is going to be the focal point in the end-times. Therefore, if the Bible really does teach in Daniel 9:27 that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is going to be torn down for a rebuilt Jewish Temple, why should any of us seek to prevent it? Sure, it very well might ignite a regional war and even ignite tensions around the world, but it's all part of God’s prophetic plan. Not to worry though, things might not get really ugly until after the "rapture," so the Christians today who are cheering for events that would bring about World War III won’t have to worry about it anyway. Unless of course, they are wrong about the whole thing.

An open letter to Jose Manuel Barroso -- Response to an interview in The Daily Telegraph (UK) about "Political Correctness" : Islam is not the enemy of the West; it has been the West that has never accepted Islam since its inception.

Calling Out Idiot America Sadly, Congress’ smoke-and-mirrors approach to the Iraq war creates the impression of much activity while generating no result. Even more sadly, the majority of Americans are falling for the act, either by continuing their past trend of political disengagement or by thinking that the gesticulation and pontification taking place in Washington, D.C., actually translate into useful work. The fact is, most Americans are ill-placed intellectually, either through genuine ignorance, a lack of curiosity or a combination of both, to judge for themselves the efficacy of congressional behavior when it comes to Iraq. Congress claims to be searching for a solution to Iraq, and many Americans simply accept that this is this case.

I am right. You are wrong. You are dead! People will readily go to war once they have been impregnated with a sufficient intensity of hate, mixed with the essential ingredient of fear. They will eagerly follow any leader who promises (however spuriously) to protect them from what they are told to hate and/or fear. The masses can be programmed to hate, and these masterminds know it well.

The crushing fear that stalks America There's a helluva difference between Cairo University and the campus of Valdosta in the Deep South of the United States. I visited both this week and I feel like I've been travelling on a gloomy spaceship - or maybe a time machine - with just two distant constellations to guide my journey. One is clearly named Iraq; the other is Fear. They have a lot in common.

Richard Holbrooke, Samantha Power, and the “Worthy-Genocide” Establishment Worthy genocides are those mass killings carried out by bad people, notably U.S. enemies and targets, and they receive great attention and elicit much passion; the unworthy ones are carried out by the United States or one of its client states, and they receive little attention or indignation and are not labelled genocides, even where the scale of killings greatly exceeds those so designated, obviously based on political utility. As the United States is an aggressive superpower that has been “projecting power” and opposing popular and revolutionary movements on a global scale since World War II, a very good case can be made that the unworthy genocides that it has carried out or supported have been predominant over the past half century—that it has been the source of more “problems from hell” than any other state.

Silence of the Lambs? Proof of US orchestration of Death Squads Killings in Iraq What made Professor Samarree’s story most striking were the details of his release. Professor Samarree’s physical condition was so bad when the American soldiers discovered the facility that he, along with around a dozen other detainees, was instantly taken to a local hospital. Here, he and his companions remained without access to lawyers, journalists, officials or even a telephone. In fact, it quickly became clear that these victims of torture were to be returned to Iraqi detention. Professor Samarree, another of whose sons lives in the United States, was fortunate to be able to persuade an American solider to take pity on him and assist him and two of his companions to escape. The last words the soldier said to Professor Samarree were ‘Run, run. Don’t look back!’

Further reflections on the proposed break up of Iraq I’ve been thinking more about the reaction by Iraqis to the proposed destruction of their country. With repeated attacks ascribed to Sunnis on Shi’ite targets, the only thing keeping the country from falling into a complete civil war is the realization by Iraqis that it is much more likely that these attacks are the work of agents provocateurs, attempting to break up the country on the principles of people like Oded Yinon (see, e.g., here and here and here). The conclusion isn’t difficult if you consider the absence of motive for Sunnis to attack Shi’ites and the possibility of other motives, including organized crime, individual or tribal disputes allowed to run unimpeded in the absence – thanks to the occupiers – of rule of law, the fact that the Americans – still looking to be showered with rose petals – would prefer to cast the Iraqi resistance as an internal Iraqi religious battle, and – predominantly – the Zionist conspiracy to cause civil war in Iraq.

General Petraeus & High Level Suicide in Iraq: Now, a new article reveals -- based on documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act -- that Westhusing's apparent suicide note included claims that his two commanders tolerated a mission based on "corruption, human right abuses and liars." One of those commanders: the new leader of the "surge" campaign in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus.

Westhusing, 44, had been found dead in a trailer at a military base near the Baghdad airport in June 2005, a single gunshot wound to the head. At the time, he was the highest-ranking officer to die in Iraq. The Army concluded that he committed suicide with his service pistol. Westhusing was an unusual case: “one of the Army's leading scholars of military ethics, a full professor at West Point who volunteered to serve in Iraq to be able to better teach his students. He had a doctorate in philosophy; his dissertation was an extended meditation on the meaning of honor,” Miller explained in his L.A. Times piece.

This Joke's on Us: The Gutless Mini-Politics of the Congressional Democrats Despite polls showing that 6 in 10 Americans want the U.S. out of Iraq asap, the best that this crew can come up with is a call-not binding, or course-for the president to pull out the troops by next spring or even summer. That would be over a year from now, and more than five years (!) into this criminal and incredibly stupid war.

At the rate things have been going, it would also be perhaps 1000 more dead Americans, 14,000 more gravely wounded Americans, and 100-150,000 more dead Iraqis later. And in offering this limp request, Congress is in the process of approving the appropriation of another $122 million in spending on the War in Iraq and the War in Afghanistan.

US senators ask Musharraf to hold free elections Four leading US senators have asked President Pervez Musharraf to ensure that the 2007 elections are open and to allow all legitimate parties and candidates to contest the elections, including the senior leadership of the PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League (N). A letter jointly signed by Senators Joseph Biden, John Kerry, Patrick J Leahy and Blanche L Lincoln and sent to the President, points out the arrests, abuse and harassment of government critics including politicians and newsmen after 2002 elections.

UNSC Issues Anti-Iran Resolution Pressed by the US and Britain, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) issued another illegal resolution against Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities on Saturday evening in New York. According to IRIB, UNSC 1747 Resolution unjustifiably calls on Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment process, under threat of restrictions on Iran’s imports and exports. The anti-Iran resolution also wants the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Chief to submit a report to the IAEA Board of Governors, within the next 60 days, on whether or not Iran has buckled under pressure and accepted the unjust demands of Resolution 1747.

Britain's power groups pursue nuclear option Britain's leading energy companies have held secret talks with British Energy, the electricity generator, about building a new generation of nuclear power stations. Executives from Scottish & Southern Energy and Centrica, the utilities giant that owns British Gas, are understood to have had discussions in recent weeks.

Although the talks are at a very early stage, they are the first sign that domestic energy suppliers are considering an active role in Britain's nuclear future when the Government gives the go-ahead for new nuclear stations later this year. So far only continental European energy groups such as France's EdF have publicly stated their interest in participating in a new generation of nuclear reactors in Britain. British Energy, which generates about a fifth of Britain's electricity from its eight nuclear power stations, last month called for external investors to help fund its investment in what is likely to be a £30bn nuclear programme over the coming years.

uranium Uranium is a naturally radioactive material normally used for nuclear power to generate electricity. It consists of three isotopes -- uranium-234, uranium-235 and uranium-238. However, only uranium-235 is capable of sustaining chain reactions. Though many may view nuclear technology as extremely complicated, the opposite is true -- at least for nefarious purposes. A simple gun-like mechanism could easily be assembled to set off an explosive chain reaction by colliding masses of uranium-235. About 110,000 pounds of highly enriched uranium currently fuel about 140 civilian nuclear reactors across the globe, as well as the reactors powering nine Arctic icebreakers. 132 pounds of highly enriched uranium was contained in the Nuclear bomb which was used by American Christian kafir terrorists military to destroyed millions of lives at Hiroshima.

Cheney assures early Iraq pullout won't be allowed US Vice President Dick Cheney assured political allies that an early withdrawal of US forces from Iraq would not be allowed, despite efforts by Congress to impose a deadline on US combat operations there. The comments followed an unprecedented vote Friday in the House of Representatives, which called for a pullout of US combat troops from Iraq by August 31, 2008 -- regardless of whether Iraqi security forces are ready to take over from them or not. Cheney reassured allies that the current standoff would not result in a precipitous US withdrawal from Iraq.

New York police spied on peace activists in US, Europe: report  New York police mounted a massive operation ahead of the 2004 Republican National Convention with undercover agents collecting information on peace activists at home and abroad, a US newspaper said. Citing unspecified police records and interviews, the newspaper said the New York City Police Department intelligence operation started at least a year before the Republican gathering. Undercover New York police officers attended meetings of political groups across the United States, as well as in Canada and Europe, posing as sympathizers or fellow activists, the report said.

They made friends, shared meals, exchanged e-mail messages and then filed daily reports with the department's intelligence division, the paper noted. Other investigators mined Internet sites and chat rooms. These operations helped the police identify a handful of groups and individuals who expressed interest in creating disturbances during the convention. But potential troublemakers were not the only ones to end up in the files, the paper said. In hundreds of reports stamped "NYPD Secret," the intelligence division chronicled the views and plans of people who had no apparent intention of breaking the law, the report said.

India test-fires air-to-air missile An Indian defense ministry official said India on Sunday successfully tested an indigenously developed air-to-air missile with a range of up to 80 kilometers. According to news agencies, the official said on condition of anonymity, as he was not authorized to talk to reporters, the missile, "Astra" is being developed for the Indian air force and it can be fired from a fighter aircraft without being detected by radar. India and longtime rival Pakistan regularly test-fire missiles, but normally only give each other notice for long range launches. It was not immediately clear whether India informed neighboring Pakistan, also a declared nuclear power, ahead of Sunday's test.

India resists US pressure on pipeline project Indian petroleum minister Murli Deora on Saturday announced that New Delhi will not buckle under any pressure including that of the US concerning the joint pipeline project to import gas from the Islamic Republic of Iran. According to the Indian daily Financial Express, Deora said, no country can debar India from this project, which he termed the pipeline of peace and progress. Deora’s statement follows the meddling remarks of US energy secretary Samuel W. Bodman, during his visit to India last week, when he said the US does not approve of Iran’s importing of gas from Iran, since the revenues would be used by Tehran to fund its nuclear programme.

INDIA - Project-Displaced Camp in India's Capital  Thousands of women and men, most of them dirt-poor and marginalised from India's villages, have sat day after day, their emaciated children in tow, listening to each other's stories of loss and protest, deprivation and abuse. Policies of economic globalisation and markets pursued single-mindedly by the government have hit India's small farmers and unorganised workers the hardest. Everywhere, small groups have mobilised into campaigns to resist the sweeping changes being introduced recklessly in a despairing countryside.

Australian city aims for world first climate change blackout Australia's largest city will be plunged into darkness for an hour in an attempt at a world first blackout to raise awareness of global warming, organisers say. A successful switch-off could then be copied by major cities around the world in a drive to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions blamed for climate change, according to international conservation group WWF.
