15 British Christian kafir terrorists military sailors and marines The 15 British sailors and marines who were patrolling the Shatt-al-Arab - or Arvand Roud, as it is known in Iran - were not exactly indulging in a little bit of Rod Stewart ("I am sailing/stormy waters/to be with you/to be free"). They had their guns loaded. These would certainly have been fired against Iraqi smugglers - or, better yet, the Iraqi resistance, Sunni or Shi'ite. But suddenly the British were confronted not by Iraqi but by Iranian gunboats. This correspondent has been to the Shatt-al-Arab. It's a busy and tricky waterway, to say the least. Iraqi fishing boats share the waters with Iranian patrol boats. From the Iraqi shore one can see the Iranian shore, flags aflutter. These remain extremely disputed waters. In 1975, a treaty was signed in Algiers between the shah of Iran and Saddam Hussein. The center of the river was supposed to be the border. Then Saddam invaded Iran in 1980. After the Iran-Iraq War that this sparked ended in 1988, and even after both Gulf wars, things remain perilously inconclusive: a new treaty still has not been signed.

The British are adamant that the sailors were in Iraqi waters checking for cars, not weapons, being smuggled. It's almost laughable that the Royal Navy should be reduced to finding dangerous Toyotas in the Persian Gulf. Some reports from Tehran claim the British were actually checking Iranian military preparations ahead of a possible confrontation with the US.

Western corporate media overwhelmingly take for granted that the British were in Iraqi or "international" waters (wrong: these are disputed Iran/Iraq waters). Tehran has accused the British of "blatant aggression" and reminded world public opinion "this is not the first time that Britain commits such illegal acts" (which is true). Tehran diplomats later suggested that the British might be charged with espionage (which is actually the case in Khuzestan province in Iran, conducted by US Special Forces). Source Pepe Escobar

Britain suspends contacts with Iran as navy crisis grows Britain on Wednesday froze all contacts with Iran as a dispute over 15 detained sailors intensified with Prime Minister Tony Blair vowing to step up pressure on the Islamic Republic. Britain produced evidence which it said proved that the sailors and marines were in Iraqi waters when detained last Friday in the Gulf. Iran insisted the Britons were in its territory. A few minutes earlier, Blair emphasized British determination in the dispute. "It is now time to ratchet up the diplomatic and international pressure" on Tehran, Blair told parliament, adding that "there was no justification whatever" for the detention of the Britons.

British Forces Violation of Iran’s Territory as ‘Provocative’ Iran’s Ambassador to Germany, Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh, termed the violation of Iran’s territory by the British forces as provocative. During an interview with IRNA, following his meeting with the German Foreign Ministry officials, Tuesday, Akhoundzadeh said he has told the German authorities that the related Iranian officials are currently investigating the violation of Iran’s territory by the British sailors and will announce the outcome of their investigations. He said the detention of the British sailors by Iran’s border guards is a purely bilateral issue between Tehran and London and British troops have been conducting provocative acts in the past also. Iran’s border guards arrested 15 British sailors last Friday due to violation of Iran’s territorial waters.

Russian military intelligence services are reporting a flurry of activity by U.S. Armed Forces near Iran's borders, a high-ranking security source said Tuesday "The latest military intelligence data point to heightened U.S. military preparations for both an air and ground operation against Iran," the official said, adding that the Pentagon has probably not yet made a final decision as to when an attack will be launched. He said the Pentagon is looking for a way to deliver a strike against Iran "that would enable the Americans to bring the country to its knees at minimal cost." He also said the U.S. Naval presence in the Persian Gulf has for the first time in the past four years reached the level that existed shortly before the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Col.-Gen. Leonid Ivashov, vice president of the Academy of Geopolitical Sciences, said last week that the Pentagon is planning to deliver a massive air strike on Iran's military infrastructure in the near future. A new U.S. carrier battle group has been dispatched to the Gulf. The USS John C. Stennis, with a crew of 3,200 and around 80 fixed-wing aircraft, including F/A-18 Hornet and Superhornet fighter-bombers, eight support ships and four nuclear submarines are heading for the Gulf, where a similar group led by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has been deployed since December 2006. The U.S. is also sending Patriot anti-missile systems to the region.

Letter of the Mujahid Izzat Al Duri to the Arab Summit in Ryad I say and I remind that the infidel - al kafir-, the bloodthirsty, the tyrant, the despotic, the usurper occupier is still occupying your country, the country of Arabity and Islam and since the ninth of April 2003 he is still destroying, mass murdering and displacing millions of the sons and daughters of Iraq! Hundreds of thousands of martyrs and hundreds of thousands of detainees and missing.. More than four million refugees and displaced Iraqis.. The Occupier has assassinated every signs of moral and material life.. It has divided Iraq as a land, as a history and as a historical and united fabric and edifice for thousands of years.

The US Occupier has strongly helped pagan Persian Iran and gave it the opportunity to kill the people values, deform its doctrine and change its social edifice and its inhabitants structures making today's occupied Iraq with its Safawides collaborators nothing else but a Persian district where Iran roams and does whatever it wants and it desires.

Iraq today is being used as a basis for the US imperialism, the Zionism and pagan Persian Safawides to export Khomeyni Safawide revolution to all our nation countries to deform their identity, to steal their faith and to plunder their future.

"One Picture Sits Over Differing Surveys" The Sunday Times of London published the results of a survey Mar. 18 carried out by the British firm Opinion Research Business that claimed that most Iraqis prefer life under the new government to life under Saddam Hussein. Another published the same day, sponsored by USA Today newspaper, the ABC news channel in the United States, BBC and the German television network ARD, found that six in ten Iraqis thought their lives were going badly, and only a third expected anything would get better in a year's time.

But Iraqis were not looking at the surveys - they do not need to. Life around them tells its own story.

"Our government and its American friends don't know much about us," 35-year-old teacher Razzaq Ahmed from Ramadi told IPS. "All they care about is their war against al-Qaeda." And residents say the government seems to care little about the rights of Iraqi people, their right to life itself. One event after another drives home that message to people.

Arab leadership responsible for disunity among Muslim countries and Iraq "illegitimate foreign occupation": King Abdullah Saudi King Abdullah, whose country is a close US ally, on Wednesday slammed the "illegitimate foreign occupation" of Iraq in an opening speech to the annual Arab summit in Riyadh. He said that the foreign forces may not be allowed to decide the future of Middle East, adding that Arab leadership is responsible for the disunity among the Arab world and Arab leaders are condemnable, as they could not get over their mutual differences. "In beloved Iraq, blood is being shed among brothers in the shadow of an illegitimate foreign occupation, and ugly sectarianism threatens civil war," Abdullah said.

Saudi king 'wrong' to say US occupies Iraq: White House Saudi King Abdullah, a key US ally among Arab states, was wrong to call US military presence in Iraq an "illegitimate foreign occupation," the White House said Wednesday. "The United States is in Iraq at the request of the Iraqis and under a United Nations mandate. Any suggestion to the contrary is wrong," said National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe.
Which Iraqis requested America to come and mass murder millions of their brothers and sisters, displacing millions, destroyed their living hood, sow the seed of division, take control of Iraqi oil....we ask National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe to identify these Iraqis to the world.

Global Research: US Used Depleted Uranium in Iraq The Canadian journal, Global Research, says the US has used over 390 tons of depleted uranium in Iraq, which has a vastly destructive effect on the region. The Global Research wrote, according to NASA figures the depleted uranium the US has used in Iraq would have poisonous effects on the region that would last up to four billion years and further endanger the environment. Environmentalists have repeatedly warned of the dangers of depleted uranium and the violation of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The US currently has a stockpile of over one million pounds of depleted uranium using most of it to build weapons.

America's Forgotten City In New Orleans, people live without electricity, plumbing, and any kind of economic stability; Black, White and Hispanic people, all multi generationally indigenous to New Orleans. Virtually all businesses, corporate and mom and pops stores alike, remain vacant ruins. Throughout America, people suffer serious ailments from the lack of job availability, but this gave unemployment a new meaning. Many good people, law abiding by nature, have turned to the only market available; drugs, to either psychologically escape their despair or to earn even the littlest of funds to secure food for themselves and their loved ones.

Bush's Budget Projects $333 Billion Tax Increase On page 301, the Joint Committee projects that the President's proposed standard deduction for health insurance, coupled with repeal of the exclusion for employer-paid health insurance, self-employed health insurance deduction, and itemized medical deductions, would result in a $333 billion tax increase over 10 years.

US homes built onparadox, hypocrisy ... The demographic phenomenon of "exurbia" that helps drive Republican victories in the US has a rotten foundation (not to mention a mortgage crisis). The new McHouses were built almost entirely by illegal labor from Mexico, which benefited corporate America but created a new political culture bent on demonizing the very "slaves" who built them.

Broken promises and barefaced lies, the Democrats strike again We have observed the same song and dance so many times before it’s hard to believe more didn’t see it coming. The Democrats once again let down their constituents and all the other voters who ushered them in to power last November -- believing, in utter stupidity, that they would somehow halt the madness of the Iraq war by challenging the Bush administration and their Republican allies in Congress.

Rover is not on the menu, Wilbur is, and Mahmoud just starved to death - "Another bacon burger, anyone?" Let’s face it. We are obsessed with American Capitalism, a system so rotten that it actually encourages, enables, legalizes, and richly rewards pathological degrees of narcissism, greed, competitiveness, and ruthlessness. While millions suffer and die because of us, we cocoon ourselves in impenetrable bubbles of denial and continue feeding our pathetic addictions to fast food, gas guzzling automobiles, American Idol, military domination, video games, the NFL, “righteous” Christianity, and the acquisition of material possessions. Yet we actually expect human beings who are not mentally incapacitated to believe that the United States is a beacon of hope for humanity on a noble quest to spread “freedom and democracy”? How could one maintain a straight face while asserting that a Constitutional Republic (alleged to be premised on Enlightened principles) could co-exist with such a deeply depraved socioeconomic system? While many of us mollify ourselves with the belief that the malevolence of the Bush administration is merely an anomaly in American government, the reality is that the current administration has simply become emboldened enough to dispose of the false mask of benevolence worn tightly by its predecessors.

Has a new slave dynasty taken power in South Asia? So why do you suppose the Indian government decided to abandon its own widely awaited project to retrieve Bahadur Shah's remains from Rangoon? The answer is not far to seek. The memory of Bahadur Shah Zafar should haunt our rulers, not just in India alone but also in Pakistan and Bangladesh, if not also Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, like Banquo's ghost had stalked his usurpers. Zafar's tragedy has too many close resemblances with what is happening in Iraq or in Afghanistan, and is being planned for Iran today, to be of comfort to our rulers.

Myths of the Global Market In fact, not even consumers in the developed world are happier by ever more market commodities. When scientific studies like Robert Lane=s The Loss of Happiness in Market Democracies (Yale, 2000) show that population satisfaction does not increase, but Aneatly reflects the law of diminishing returns@ as income and commodity consumption rise above a certain level, the message does not compute to economists or policy makers. The reason for this is that neoclassical economics is based on the first premise that market growth produces more happiness the more commodities are bought - so-called Amarginal utilities@ that correspond to prices paid. If this baseline assumption is false, the paradigm collapses. So the ground is shifted to other claims. The Economist explains that many Agoods@ can be Aonly enjoyed if others don=t@[have them]. The falsehood of the first principle is diverted from by a shift to the nasty fact that some can only enjoy what they get if it is at others= expense. In the end, all that matters is willingness to pay a market price if one can afford it, the only measure of human welfare that exists in market and neoclassical doctrine.

Old Idea; New Sales Pitch - The North American Union ID Way back in the pre-bin Laden days of 1998, Ontario wanted to “replace drivers licenses and health cards with a single computerized smart card, capable of storing vast amounts of information about an individual” complete with fingerprints, patient's treatment history, doctor's phone number, other health data, driving record and a “computer chip”. Even before this, Alberta and BC had rejected similar plans.

Breaking the Silence on the Israel Lobby

Russia Blasts US Global Policy Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized US global policy, branding it as blatant use of force and military adventurism. Moscow issued a statement and took a swipe at the US for dragging the entire world into a crisis on Iran's nuclear issue. Observers believe the statement is Russia's signal to Washington that it will pursue its independent policies in the international arena. The statement further cited Iran as a major regional power in the Middle East, which is serving the international peace and security by maintaining stability in Afghanistan and Central Asia. Russia and US have entered into a new round of political boxing and show of power after Washington unveiled its provocative plans some months ago to set up its missile and radar systems in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Putin tells Bush of missile shield worries President Vladimir Putin expressed Russia's concerns about US plans for a missile shield in Europe in a telephone conversation with President George W. Bush on Wednesday, the Kremlin said. "Vladimir Putin set out the reasons for Russian concern about the US plans to create a base for an anti-missile system in Central Europe," a Kremlin statement said.

Prince Hassan - Neocons and Israel Plan “New 100 Years of War” in the Middle East Do a Google News search on “Prince Hassan Bin Tallal” or “Talal” and the results will point to the Daily Star of Lebanon and Today’s Zaman out of Turkey, but not one result over at the New York Times, ABC News, CNN, Fox, et al. Of course, this is hardly surprising, because you’re not supposed to know what Prince Hassan Bin Talal knows, in fact what millions of Arabs know. Here in America, we have more urgent concerns—for instance the “news” that the drug addict Anna Nicole Smith died of an overdose. And what does Bin Talal and millions of Arabs know?

Gulf economies to 'drop the dollar' Gulf economies will move away from a dollar currency peg and shift foreign exchange reserves away from dollar to other currencies, including the Chinese yuan, the chief executive of Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) has said.

The Zionists forces also abducted 37 Hamas members. Meanwhile, Israel Jewish terrorists bulldozed shopping centres in the Barta'eh settlement southwest of Jenin. Increase In Child Poverty In UK The number of children living in relative poverty in the UK increased for the first time in nearly a decade last year by 200,000. The number was 2.8 million without taking account of housing costs, up from 2.7 m in the previous year, casting further doubt on the government meeting its target of halving child poverty by 2010.

US court says allege 'Mujahideen' detainees cannot sue Rumsfeld Nine foreigners cannot sue former defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld for their torture as prisoners of the US "war on Islam," a US judge found Tuesday. Federal judge Thomas Hogan said Rumsfeld could not be sued in a US court because the men, held in Iraq and Afghanistan, had no standing to sue due to a technicality: none has set foot in the United States nor are they US citizens.

However, Hogan regretted that he could not allow the suit to go forward under laws that allow persons alleging violations of their rights to sue the responsible US officials, "no matter how appealing it might be." He called the case "lamentable," for its "horrifying torture allegations." "Several controlling cases compel the inescapable conclusion that the plaintiffs in this case are not entitled to such a cause of action," he said. The nine men claim to have been wrongly arrested, detained and tortured by the US army. They filed suit in 2005 against Rumsfeld and three other high-ranking military officials, for their supposed responsibility in ordering the use of violent interrogation methods and for not having stopped it.

The four officials asked the judge to throw out the case, arguing the men had neither standing nor rights under the US constitution. In a December 8, 2006 hearing, Hogan recognized that if he were to allow such lawsuits, nothing could stop Osama bin Laden from bringing suit in the United States to demand reparations from President George W. Bush for attempted murder. Bush has admitted that the United States uses "alternative" interrogation techniques, but denies using torture, despite prisoner testimony to the contrary. In November, rights groups filed suit against Rumsfeld in Germany for his role in alleged.

Must Read European colonialists conspired to destroy Khilafah On Monday 3rd March 1924 (28th Rajab 1342AH), the world woke to the news that Mustafa Kemal in Turkey had officially abolished the Khilafah. That night Abdul-Mejid II, the last Khaleefah of the Muslims, was bundled in to a car with a suitcase of clothes and money and exiled from Turkey, never to return. This is how 1342 years of Islamic rule ended. The following is a historical account of the actions of the colonial powers in first sowing the seeds of disunity amongst Muslims by implanting the idea of nationalism and then finally administering the destruction of the Khilafah state by their treacherous agents.

Mr. Bush, Your Arab League Summit is Convened This is not a summit of leaders but a trough of corrupt cowardly dictators whose self interest is above all considerations of faith, humanity, and service to their people. Oh, how history repeats itself in the Arab world. For over a century the Arabs have failed miserably in their analytical assessment and response to the colonial ambitions of the British, French, Soviets, Americans, and today’s dominant power-- Israel

Pakistan crosses a dangerous boundary Independent sources confirmed to Asia Times Online that special security forces of the Pakistan Army conducted raids in an attempt to arrest Uzbek commander Tahir Yaldeshiv. There are unconfirmed reports that some Pakistani soldiers died in clashes with Uzbek militants.

Further, it has emerged that a faction of the Taliban led by Maulvi Nazir allied with the Pakistani military to take on the foreign militants. This is a controversial move. Last September, Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire with pro-Taliban, Pashtun tribal leaders under which it withdrew thousands of troops from the North Waziristan tribal area and released several hundred Taliban and al-Qaeda militants from jail.

This agreement is now in jeopardy and, more significant, it pits the "coalition" of Nazir's Taliban and the Pakistani military against the leaders of the "Islamic State of Waziristans" . These leaders control the shuras (councils) of the Mujahideen in the two Waziristans and support the foreign militants.

American Christian kafir terrorists Military launches huge show of force in Persian Gulf The American Christian kafir terrorists Navy on Tuesday began its largest demonstration of force in the Persian Gulf since the2003 invasion of Iraq, led by a pair of aircraft carriers and backed by warplanes flying simulated attack maneuvers off the coast of Iran. The maneuvers bring together two strike groups of American Christian kafir terrorists military warships and more than a hundred American Christian kafir terrorists occupation military warplanes to conduct simulated air warfare in the crowded Gulf shipping lanes. The American Christian kafir terrorists military exercises come just four days after Iran's capture of 15 British Christian kafir terrorists military sailors and marines who had, Iran said, strayed into Iranian waters near the Gulf.

UN Security Or United Rape? As I watched Iran being hauled in front of the United Nations ‘Security’ Council, a vivid picture conjured up in my mind – my native country Iran, a vulnerable and defenseless beauty being prepared for violation by brutal savages. As she struggles to defend her honor, no one is prepared to come to her aid, save a few. Even her own children, those raised on her soil hope she will be brutally raped. With lust-filled eyes, they hope to fulfill their ambitions on her ravaged ruins, her broken pride.

Who are these beasts, and what has transformed this United body to such a menace?

The most uninformed among us knows that the United States is dictating the rules at the ‘Security’ Council. The driving force behind the American policy makers’ actions is Israel represented by AIPAC and other Israeli representatives in the United States. However, while Zionism gives motivation to the neo-conservatives in Washington to rape and ravage the Middle-East, Washington stands to benefit from AIPAC’s/Israel’s commands.

Revisiting Babri These formulations were lapped up by the dominant middle classes, who started responding more and more to Yatras and other VHP initiated campaigns. After playing this 'Muslim card' the immature Congress leadership decided to play the Hindu card by yielding to the pressure of BJP/VHP and company for getting the locks of Babri opened and later permitting Shilaynyas for Ram temple. This pressure of Hindu rightwing was also discernible when Rajiv launched the campaign for 1989 elections on the plank of Ram Rajya. These came in handy to Hindu consolidation, which later got further boost when V.P. Singh, for his own compulsions, decided to implement Mandal. To bypass Mandal BJP resorted to intensify Yatras, identity based politics. Keeping electoral compulsions in mind, BJP's politics revolved around Ram Temple as its central agenda. Incidentally Ram temple was no where on the agenda of BJP, which was harping on Gandhian socialism, till then. Its discovery that Lord Ram can be of great help in garnering votes led it to put most of its eggs in the basket of the campaign and conspiracy to destroy the Babri Mosque.

Daily Telegraph- "War continues in Chechnya" One Western journalist, Adrian Blomfield, could enter in the Chechen village of Tazen-kala. He became a witness that war continues in Chechnya, in spite of Putin's propaganda. This person is not a supporter of Jihad, and he somewhere uses incorrect terminology, such as "rebels" or "wahabi" in appliance to mojaheds and "special forces" or "loyalists" in appliance to the bloody puppets and traitors. But he states without any hesitation: "War is not finished in Chechnya", in this connection his article has value. On this reason we publish it without changes.

China a bit to take over Tibet invest $13 billion in Tibet The money would be spent on 180 projects in the years up to 2010, including extending the predominantly Buddhist region's first railway, Xinhua news agency said. China shifts to euros for Iran oil China's state-run Zhuhai Zhenrong Corp, the biggest buyer of Iranian crude worldwide, began paying for its oil in euros late last year as Tehran moves to diversify its foreign reserves away from U.S. dollars. The Chinese firm, which buys more than a tenth of exports from the world's fourth-largest crude producer, has changed the payment currency for the bulk of its roughly 240,000 barrels per day (bpd) contract, Beijing-based sources said. Just one more reason for America to attack Iran, as this move by Iran endangers the US dollar hegemony, just as Saddam was about to do by transfer from US dollars to Euros when selling Iraq's oil in the international market.

Nearly 200 Chinese companies are showcasing their products at the fair, said to be China's biggest ever in a foreign country.

Hidden US hand in Philippine election Sulu's economy is still highly reliant on foreign aid. The US has not indicated whether it plans to continue pouring substantial development assistance into the region if Misuari is elected over Loong, but the US Embassy in Manila has insisted that it will respect the results of Sulu's democratic process. Yet it's clear to many voters that hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of aid programs lie in the electoral balance.

A Cluster Bomb Treaty: Again, It's The U.S. v. The World Thankfully, the international community is taking action. In an historic step forward, Norway hosted the Oslo Conference on Cluster Munitions in late February 2007, where 49 countries met to discuss how to address the indiscriminate and lasting effects of cluster munitions on civilians. At the conference, 46 countries agreed to a landmark declaration detailing their goal to conclude by 2008 a legally binding treaty prohibiting the use, production, transfer, and stockpiling of cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians. Half of the world’s 34 producer countries, one-third of the world’s stockpiling countries, six users or former users, and six affected states signed the Oslo declaration. Countries will meet again to determine the details of the treaty in Lima, Vienna, and Dublin over the next two years. The Bush administration did not send a representative to the Oslo meeting and, absent a policy change, is unlikely to participate in subsequent meetings.

Will an American Surge Win the War for Oil? Alright, so a plan that was developed with questionable science and selective readings of intelligence has, after initially being supported by a population that trusted what they were told, become exceedingly unpopular. Despite the fact that the normally timid opposition has been uncharacteristically emboldened into questioning the goals of the policy, this same opposition states “We have to stay the course,” while mumbling about finding alternatives that will help the economy wean off dependence on this oil-producing region. The noises being made by politicians on the matter is simply reflective of the over-all population who say time and again, when asked, that reversing the dangerous course we are on is their top priority. So the neoconservatives in power have, after their secret plans were leaked, begun to escalate operations in a massive ‘Surge!’

US Senate launches Iraq debate The US Senate on Monday opened debate on legislation which sets a goal of pulling combat troops out of Iraq by March 31, 2008, launching a new showdown with President George W. Bush. The debate came after the House of Representatives last week passed its own version of the spending bill for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, including a firm deadline for getting US troops out of Iraq by August 31, 2008. Bush has vowed to veto any legislation that calls for a timetable for withdrawal, and accused Democratic leaders of micromanaging military strategy best left to generals. "We are now in the fifth year of the war, a terrible war," said Democratic Senator Robert Byrd as he opened the debate. "Our job in the Senate is not to look backwards, but to look forwards, the constitution clearly gives the Congress the power ... to decide when this nation should go to war ... and the power of the purse." But Republican Senator Thad Cochran said the Senate would be better served by giving Bush's new strategy to surge more than 21,500 troops into Iraq time to work. "The Senate should provide the resources necessary to accomplish this mission. Congress should not be tying the hands of our commanders. No votes were expected on the 121.6 billion dollar budget on Monday. Bush's Republican allies have signaled they will try to block the timeline for withdrawal.

Los Angeles- Vicious War on the Homeless Widespread homelessness in the world's richest country is a shameful indictment of a system that places profit before human need. That Los Angeles' best response to its homeless crisis is to criminalize, intimidate and incarcerate its most vulnerable shows why we need to organize and fight for a world with different priorities.

The Pentagon’s Power to Jail Americans Indefinitely Last Friday, the presiding judge in the case, Marcia Cooke, denied Padilla’s motion to dismiss. The judge held that when a person, including an American citizen, is held in custody by the Pentagon as an “enemy combatant,” the time doesn’t start running with respect to his right to a speedy trial. It begins running, she held, only when he becomes part of the federal criminal-justice system. Gee, I wonder if the judge’s reasoning applies to the rest of the Bill of Rights as well. Maybe the First Amendment doesn’t apply if it’s the Pentagon that is suppressing speech and assembly as part of its perpetual “war on terror.” Or maybe the Second Amendment prohibits only the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), not the Pentagon, from seizing guns from the American people, as it is doing as part of the “war on terror” in Iraq.

Robert Garside becomes first man to run around the world A 40-year-old British man will on Tuesday become the first person recognized as having run around the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Robert Garside will run into Picadilly Circus in central London, where he began his first attempt to jog around the world in December 1996, to be presented with a certificate by authorities from the publication. Garside, then a 29-year-old psychology student, failed in that attempt, and it was only on his fourth try -- beginning at India Gate in New Delhi the following year -- that he succeeded, ending up back in the Indian capital in June 2003. "I am unbelievably happy that an incredibly long project has finally ended up on a positive note," Garside said. "I am so happy and relieved and I am so grateful to all those people all over the world who helped me throughout the years I was running." While traversing the world over five years and eight months, Garside ran across 30 countries on six continents, covering more than 30,000 miles (48,000 kilometres). During that time, he slept in the snow in the Himalayas, and at a monastery in Tibet, and also had to out-run thieves in Mexico and gunmen in Panama. He even spent five nights in a Chinese jail for not having the right travel documents.

Arab leaders ready to sell their brothers blood Saudi Arabia's foreign minister suggested Monday that Arab leaders would be willing to consider changes in their 2002 peace offer to Israel to make it "compatible" with new developments. The statement from Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal came as Arab League foreign ministers convened Monday to prepare for a leaders summit later this week, expected to focus on how to revive Middle East peace efforts. Arab leaders have, until now, publicly rejected Israeli calls for them to make changes to the 2002 Arab peace offer.

Is the American Empire on the Brink of Collapse? U.S. military expert Chalmers Johnson argues the catastrophe in Iraq and the staggering cost of running a military that stretches across 130 countries on 737 bases may finally cost America its empire. I believe that we're close to a tipping point right now. What happened to the Soviet Union between 1989 and 1991 could easily be happening to us for essentially the same reasons. Imperial overreach, inability to reform, rigid economic ideology. ... The world's balance of power didn't change one iota on September 11, 2001. The only way we could lose the power and influence we had at that time was through our own actions, and that's what we did.

The Violence of the Letter- Land Claims and Continuing Colonial Conquest in Canada The recent struggle over lands in southern Ontario near Caledonia points to the continuing problem with land-claims policy in Canada. This sentence could be used to begin an article every few years, only the place names change: the recent struggle at Grassy Narrows, the recent struggle at Stoney Point, the recent struggle at Oka. While there is a sense in which the current land-claims policy goes back to the beginnings of colonialism in Canada, the recent permutations are worth attention. Any understanding of contemporary conflicts needs to be informed by a strong and detailed sense of what has happened historically, as well as what is happening today.

What Does 'Holocaust Denial' Really Mean? For more than fifty years Jewish scholars have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to document each Jewish victim of the Nazi Holocaust. The Nazis were German, obsessed with record keeping. Yet only 3 million names have been collected and many of them died of natural causes. So why is it so wrong to doubt that fewer than 6 million Jews were murdered in the Second World War?

Capitalism “There are two fruitcake religions infecting the USA right now: Kristianity and Ferengiism. By Ferengiism I mean the belief that you must do whatever makes you the most money no matter what the short or long term consequences to yourself or others. It is the state corporate religion.”

The biggest problem with capitalism is that its solutions are based purely on short term economics, how to provide a given service most cheaply to the consumer. Only producer and consumer are involved. However, in the process of providing that service, many others may be adversely affected, especially in the long term. They have no input into the decision making process. Examples would include such things as cars that pollute, boom boxes that can be heard for blocks, snowmobiles designed to harass wildlife, harsh chemicals that kill fish when improperly disposed of, or in an extreme case, atomic weapons. Capitalism fails to consider the big picture. It is sort of like looking at the world through gold-coloured glasses. It has no way of considering non-economic factors in decision making.

Radioactive waste coming to a location near you? Storing millions of bundles of intensely radioactive waste fuel underground in heavily populated southern and eastern Ontario is rapidly shaping up as a geologically safe choice, according to the nuclear industry. Earlier disposal studies by federal agencies concluded the Canadian Shield's granite was the only rock formation stable enough for the necessary millennia of storage. But a just released report from the industry-led Nuclear Waste Management Organization gives a tentative green light to locations like Toronto, London, Hamilton-Niagara, Windsor-Sarnia, Kingston, Ottawa and a swathe running from Kitchener- Waterloo to Barrie. Nuclear mausoleums could be buried a kilometre deep in these areas because the underlying sedimentary rock is low risk for fractures and water seepage, says the organization's annual report to the federal government. "Safety cases for repositories in sedimentary rock appear to be quite strong," the report says. The organization will not study a specific location until the federal government gives a green light to its favoured form of long-term storage.

About 1.9 million bundles of waste uranium fuel are now stored temporarily on site at Canada's 22 nuclear reactors, largely in concrete casks inside ordinary metal sheds on the surface. The waste can remain dangerously radioactive for as long as 100 centuries. More than $800 million has been spent by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., Ontario Power Generation and others since 1978 on research into storing waste fuel bundles deep in the shield. The federal government has not yet responded to the organization's formal November 2005 recommendation for a $24-billion mausoleum, consisting of caverns excavated up to a kilometre below ground. Blair ‘threatened’ to resign if questioned in corruption probe The Sunday Telegraph newspaper disclosed on Monday that British Prime Minister Tony Blair had threatened to resign if questioned as a suspect by police in the “cash for honours” probe. The weekly said, detectives investigating the scandal wanted to interview Blair under caution but backed off after being warned that it could have triggered his resignation. The “cash for honors” investigation centres on reports that political parties, mainly Blair’s governing Labor Party, offered seats in parliament’s unelected upper chamber, the House of Lords, in return for financial assistance. The Sunday Telegraph said officers wanted to quest
