Those Who Continue to Lecture Us–Pt II Well, one would think that after having their vulgar, violent, vindictive behavior exposed a few days ago in my most recent piece that it might raise some sense of shame in these people who are constantly lecturing the rest of us on ‘moral’ themes such as hate, bigotry, racism, etc, etc, etc. Well, that might be the case when dealing with someone from any other faith or culture, but not when it comes to these folks. After all, keep in mind that these are God’s chosen people and therefore they don’t have to answer or apologize for anything.

Free Trade vs. Small Farmers The 20th century was a terrible blight on small farmers everywhere. In both wealthy capitalist economies and in socialist countries, farmers paid a heavy price for industrialization. In advanced capitalist countries like the United States, a deadly combination of economies of scale, capital-intensive technology, and the market led to large corporations cornering agricultural production and processing. Small and medium farms were relegated to a marginal role in production and a minuscule portion of the work force. Today, perhaps the greatest threat to small farmers is free trade. And the farmers are fighting back. They have helped, for instance, to stalemate the Doha round of negotiations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). This tug of war between farmers and free trade is nowhere more visible than in Asia.

Peace, Clean Energy, And Priorities Our current energy architecture have led to global warming, a potentially-terminal problem at least for civilization and the majority of Earth’s higher species. Everything we need to rebalance the carbon cycle is in our hands. But the enemy that has gotten enormously powerful delivering us to this crucial predicament will use this power to protect their profits.

Anti-Capitalism in Five Minutes or Less We know that capitalism is not just the most sensible way to organize an economy but is now the only possible way to organize an economy. We know that dissenters to this conventional wisdom can, and should, be ignored. There’s no longer even any need to persecute such heretics; they are obviously irrelevant.

How do we know all this? Because we are told so, relentlessly — typically by those who have the most to gain from such a claim, most notably those in the business world and their functionaries and apologists in the schools, universities, mass media, and mainstream politics. Capitalism is not a choice, but rather simply is, like a state of nature. Maybe not like a state of nature, but the state of nature. To contest capitalism these days is like arguing against the air that we breathe. Arguing against capitalism, we’re told, is simply crazy.
