Emergency services put out a fire at the scene and investigators were working to uncover the cause of the explosion, the Ukrainian state gas company Naftogaz said. The Urengoi-Uzhgorod pipeline has a capacity of 27.9 billion cubic metres of gas a year, Interfax news agency reported. The emergency ministry said a bypass route was used to ensure continued supplies.

Massive star explodes in brightest-ever supernova US stargazers beheld the most spectacular supernova ever seen when a massive star exploded in a cosmic flash 50 billion times brighter than the sun, space agency NASA said Monday. “Of all exploding stars ever observed, this was the king,” said Alex Filippenko, one of the leaders of the NASA-backed operations which observed the phenomenon that began last fall, in a statement presenting the find. World Bank Panel Finds Wolfowitz Broke Rules A World Bank panel has found that bank President Paul Wolfowitz's handling of a promotion and pay increase for his companion represented a conflict of interest and broke rules. A meeting of the 24-nation World Bank board, which will determine whether Wolfowitz should be fired for his actions, is now scheduled for later in the week, possibly on Friday. As Wolfowitz started a critical week, one of his top aides, Kevin Kellems, resigned early on Monday, saying the turmoil at the bank over its current leadership has made it difficult for him to do his job.
