Depleted Uranium weapons can cause lung cancer Researchers at University of Southern Maine in Portland have revealed that Depleted Uranium (DU) weapons may cause cancer, though so far the US government has been denying the possibility. Previous research at the US government's Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico found that people exposed to DU dust were at little extra risk of developing cancers. DU is a dense, inadequately radioactive metal that is used in armour-piercing shells and huge amounts of this metal was used by US and UK army during the Iraq invasion in 2003.

In the first study undertaken to find out DU's effects on human lung cells, toxicologist John Wise and colleagues at the University of Southern Maine in Portland exposed cultures of human bronchial fibroblasts to elements of uranium oxide typically found in DU dust, reports New Scientist. The exposure changed the chromosomes in the cells, which died due to genotoxic effects that amplified with the particle concentration. The team therefore concluded that DU increases risk of lung cancer.

Neither the Rice talks nor the Samara meeting will bring any concrete steps to overcoming disagreements, said Yevgeny Volk, an analyst for the Heritage Foundation. It was only in the Cold War that relations were like this. It’s like 20 years ago. Topping Rice’s agenda will be fierce Russian opposition to a US plan for deploying a limited anti-missile defence system in Poland and the Czech Republic. She has little chance of making progress. Washington says the system is aimed at countries like Iran or North Korea, but Moscow sees a direct threat that could trigger a new arms race and has announced a freeze on a landmark Soviet-era arms limitation treaty.

Tension will also be high at the Russia-EU summit following an ugly row over a Soviet war memorial between Moscow and Estonia, a former Soviet republic that is now an EU and Nato military alliance member. Hanging over both the US and EU meetings will be growing Western criticism of Putin’s handling of political freedoms and human rights—a sensitive issue thrown into relief by plans for an opposition rally in Samara on the day of the EU summit.
 

Japan to develop anti-missile laser Japan’s Defence Ministry plans to develop a high-powered laser capable of shooting down missiles to boost its defences against North Korea, a news report said on Sunday. The ministry will ask for funds next fiscal year to develop a ground-based laser capable of destroying ballistic missiles in midair, according to the Mainichi newspaper. The ministry is also considering an anti-missile laser that can be mounted on aircraft, the report said, citing unidentified officials. Unlike the Patriot missile defence system, which Japan began deploying in March, lasers would shoot down missiles shortly after they are launched, the Mainichi said. Patriot missiles can only shoot down missiles at later stages of their trajectory. The US is already developing similar laser technology, according to the report. Defence officials in Tokyo were not immediately available for comment. The report comes amid heightened concern in Japan over North Korea’s weapons programmes. Last year, the North test-fired seven missiles into waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan, and detonated its first nuclear bomb. Since April, Japan’s Defence Ministry has provided US forces with intelligence from 28 radar sites across Japan and from its fighter squadrons and other air units, according to a separate report carried by Kyodo News agency.

China’s military intentions remain a worry for US The new head of the US Pacific Command said on Sunday that China’s anti-satellite test sent a “confusing signal” about its military intentions, adding he would push for deeper exchange and openness between the countries’ forces. Admiral Timothy Keating, who took the helm of the Pacific Command two months ago, said Guo Boxiong, the vice chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, emphasised to him that Beijing’s intentions in the January test were purely scientific.

But he said other countries saw China’s missile strike against one of its own satellites as having military overtones. ”We agreed, each of us, to hold to our different perspectives,” Keating told reporters. ”An anti-satellite test is not necessarily a clear indication of a desire for peaceful utilisation of space. It is a confusing signal, shall we say, for a country who desires, in China’s words, a peaceful rise.” China’s military modernisation and expanding defence budget have been a source of friction with the United States, which has called for more transparency and warned that a build-up of forces could be destabilising to northeast Asia.
